Our straw is made from paper, and the tested straw material demonstrated substantial microbial biodegradation during the 59-day laboratory study.

How the Straw Compared With Cellulose

The laboratory tested the straw alongside microcrystalline cellulose, a known biodegradable reference material.

What Makes This Result Meaningful

This was not simply a test of whether the straw softened, cracked, or broke into smaller pieces.

The laboratory measured the formation of methane and carbon dioxide as microorganisms converted carbon from the tested straw material. That provides evidence of actual biological breakdown under the laboratory conditions.

The cellulose reference also performed successfully, showing that the microorganisms were biologically active and that the test system was functioning properly.
